Why Now is the Time for MTDC Operators to Double Down on Sustainability Initiatives

Written by Michael Gallagher | Jul 1, 2022 1:56:08 PM

The pressure is on for organizations across industries and geographies to develop, implement, measure, and report on the progress of their sustainability initiatives. Multi-tenant data centers (MTDCs) are no exception, which is why operators are increasingly focused on reducing carbon emissions and utilizing energy efficient cooling solutions.

Calculating the Costs of Cooling

Did you know that energy costs related to cooling account for nearly 37% of the overall data center power consumption? They’re also the fastest rising data center operation expense. These are key reasons why many MTDC providers are implementing advanced cooling systems that optimize air flow with smart sensors. In fact, a recent 451 Research survey revealed that nearly 50% of MTDC operators are potentially making changes to what cooling systems they buy.

451 Research also found that nearly one third of MTDC operators say their customers want contractually binding commitments to sustainability. Regulatory agencies, industry watchdogs and even investors also expect MTDC providers to decrease their environmental footprint and clearly communicate their sustainability commitments. Some government agencies offer financing for projects that reduce carbon footprint or improve energy efficiency.

Participating in voluntary sustainability reporting frameworks such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an effective way to determine what data to track and how, as well as provide results in a manner that is consistent with what these organizations want to see.
